Can I still get an Entry Level Mechanical Engineering job with this situation

HONEY HEART , Thursday, 26th of August 2010 12:04:49 AM

l earned my Mechanical Engineering degree December last year and due to my

lack of experience and poor GPA l was not able to get an entry level job

as a mechanical engineer; however, l made some little but significant

steps in getting back on track to finally pursue my career. l joined a

engineering community projects, and l am currently working as a Machine
Operator in the daytime while taking CAD/CAM, and other technical classes
at a local community college at night. I am hoping that my volunteer work,
my technical classes, and the kind of industry(i work for a manufacturing
company that produces thermoformed plastics) that l worked in will somehow
substantiate the needed experience and technical skills in lieu of
intership/co-op and or GPA. Is this a viable idea in order to rebuild the
broken path to my dream career or should l finally walk away from
Mechanical Engineering forever?

l am not smart enough to get a
3.0 GPA as a student and though l worked hard in school l struggled pretty
much in all my college years. As an undergraduate l even approached a
professor once about a research assistant position but l was turned down.
l am consistently trying to accept the very painful reality of not
becoming a mechanical engineer but l find it difficult to be at peace with
myself; l realized that l live and breath ME and its just unfortunate that
l am not smart enough, and l lack the experience to do it. Any Mech.
Engineers out there with a similar situation, or perhaps a few honest
comments out there from Human Resources people about this kind of
situation? Am l making the right moves to get back in the right direction
or is it no longer practical for me to pursue a career as a Mechanical
Engineer? I am from California by the way, and I am not sure what the job
outlook is for Mechanical Engineers in the state.

I think you should be realistic about ur job prospects, but
Mr. Right
also stay committed to being in ME. The real question is, do you have to

be an actual ME, or can you perhaps do something in the ME field but not

specifically the engineering yourself. For example, how about a Sales

between the client, sales person, & the ME's. That may be one alternative
to look into. How about a role in a municipal planning department? What
about working in a management training program for a manufacturer which
could lead to being a plant manager? These are just some ideas to think
about. I would expand ur job search to ME related positions, go on some
interviews, & see if you like one of the opportunities. There is certainly
nothing to lose.
